Virginia McEwen, BSCN, BBA, MD, CCFP

Virginia McEwen completed medical school and family medicine residency training at NOSM in Thunder Bay, and pursued many pain-related training opportunities in addictions, sleep medicine, headache medicine and pelvic pain. After residency she pursued specialized pain medicine training at McGill University, completing a Clinical Pain Medicine Fellowship in 2020/2021. This fellowship focuses training on multidisciplinary management of chronic pain, working both with many allied health professionals and medical disciplines. Virginia enhanced her knowledge of medical management of chronic pain with pharmacotherapy, including management of neuropathic pain, and alternative strategies to opioid prescribing. The program also provided advanced interventional training in axial spine procedures for common back and neck pain issues under fluoroscopy and ultrasound guidance, and many peripheral procedures for a variety of pain conditions under ultrasound guidance. During her time at McGill, Virginia also pursued additional optional training in cancer pain management and pediatric pain in hopes of providing medical and interventional pain management options that have not previously and option in Thunder Bay.
